Two rules for everything
Softener and bleach are a hard no go. Softener clogs up the membrane's pores and kills the water repellency.
On cotton it leaves a film, makes the fabric less absorbent, which is the last thing you want wearing it as a base layer.

One group per material, a membrane jacket and a cotton tee want completely different things.
Between seasons
Wash everything before you pack it away, even the stuff that still looks clean. Salt, sunscreen and sweat don't stop working just because winter is over.
