Care Guide

Take care of your gear, and it'll take care of you out there.

Two rules for everything

Softener and bleach are a hard no go. Softener clogs up the membrane's pores and kills the water repellency.

On cotton it leaves a film, makes the fabric less absorbent, which is the last thing you want wearing it as a base layer.

Per material

Find your piece

One group per material, a membrane jacket and a cotton tee want completely different things.

Shell (jackets, pants & bibs)

Your shell stays waterproof thanks to its coating and the water-repellent (DWR) finish on the outside. Wash it regularly, and the right way, to keep both working.

  • Before washing: empty the pockets, close every zipper and hook-and-loop fastener, and loosen the drawcords.
  • Washing: machine wash cold at 30°C on a gentle cycle with a technical wash detergent. Keep the spin at 600 to 800 RPM.
  • Avoid: fabric softener and bleach, which both ruin the membrane and the water-repellent finish.
  • Drying: tumble dry on low heat. The warmth helps reactivate the water-repellent finish.
  • Ironing: do not iron.
  • Keep it beading: reproof the DWR with a spray-on or wash-in product when water stops beading.

Padded midlayer jacket

The warmth here comes from the padding, so every wash is about keeping that padding lofty. A wash bag and a few dryer balls do most of the work.

  • Before washing: close the zippers, empty the pockets and loosen the drawcords. Turn it inside out and put it in a protective mesh wash bag so the fabric can't snag.
  • Washing: machine wash cold at 30°C on a gentle cycle with a mild detergent. Add 2 or 3 dryer balls to the drum to keep the padding full.
  • Avoid: fabric softener and bleach.
  • Drying: tumble dry on low heat with a low spin, dryer balls in. That's what brings the loft back.
  • Ironing: do not iron.

Waterproof softshell

A stretchy softshell with a waterproof membrane behind the face fabric. Keep it clean and it keeps doing its job.

  • Before washing: close the zippers, empty the pockets and turn it inside out.
  • Washing: machine wash cold at 30°C on a gentle cycle with a technical wash detergent.
  • Avoid: fabric softener and bleach, which clog the membrane and the water-repellent finish.
  • Drying: hang or lay flat to dry. Do not tumble dry.
  • Ironing: do not iron.

Cotton

Soft cotton that only gets better with wear. A little care keeps its shape and its print sharp.

  • Before washing: turn it inside out and wash with similar colours.
  • Washing: machine wash at 30°C with a mild detergent.
  • Avoid: fabric softener and bleach.
  • Drying: tumble dry on low, or reshape and dry flat or on a hanger.
  • Ironing: iron inside out on medium, never over the print.
  • Good to know: cotton can shrink slightly on the first wash, so keep the heat low.

Cotton & cashmere blend (beanies)

A cotton and cashmere blend: soft, warm and a little delicate. Heat and wringing are what ruin it, so keep both away.

  • Before washing: turn it inside out.
  • Washing: hand wash in cold water with a mild, wool-safe detergent.
  • Avoid: fabric softener and bleach.
  • Drying: don't wring it. Press the water out, reshape, and dry flat.
  • Never: tumble dry, which shrinks and warps the knit.

Elastic webbing & metal (belt)

Elastic webbing with a metal buckle. It only needs a quick clean, not a full wash.

  • Cleaning: wipe clean with a damp cloth and a little mild soap.
  • Avoid: machine washing and tumble drying, which both cost the webbing its stretch.
  • Drying: air dry flat, and let it dry fully before you store it so the buckle stays clean.

Between seasons

Wash everything before you pack it away, even the stuff that still looks clean. Salt, sunscreen and sweat don't stop working just because winter is over.
